I rewarded myself with this little guy for making it one year harm-free. Simple and clean, it’s exactly what I wanted. Inspired, in part, by Andrea Gibson’s poem, “Birthday”, my bird is flying away from some of the worst of my scars toward freedom through my fingertips. I will not be held down by my self-injury any longer. After nine years of struggling, I’m finally free.
